Paddle
Paddling at Emory & Henry
There are many opportunities to learn about whitewater paddling with the Center for Outdoor Studies. Come with us on a trip! E&H trips are of no extra cost to all E&H students. Keep an eye on our social media to go on a rafting, kayaking, or paddle boarding trip with us.
The E&H whitewater paddling program offers interested students everything from basic instruction to advanced trips on the Southeast’s classic runs. Students even have the opportunity to paddle whitewater internationally in Ecuador.
Here are some of our favorite local/regional watersheds:
- South Fork of the Holston and South Holston Lake
- Nantahala River
- French Broad River
Pool Clinics
Designed for new and avid paddlers alike, pool clinics occur once every other week in our E&H swimming pool. We bring our boats the indoor setting to work on skills that prepare paddlers for the river. This is a chance for students to get one-on-one instruction that will help them succeed downriver. Email us to attend.

Be sure to take a look at the Center for Outdoor Studies courses. The CFOS coursework takes paddling to the next level by taking an in depth look at concepts such as history and key figures whitewater paddling, river rescue, reading whitewater, river running skills, decision making, group management, weather considerations, and driving and loading vehicles.
Students who complete a certain number of CFOS courses are considered for our trip leader program. Get paid to work outside! Email us at cfos@emoryhenry.edu to learn more about this unique opportunity.
