Emory & Henry Theatre Department and Barter Theatre Continue Partnership with a Formal Signing

Emory & Henry College’s Theatre Department and the Barter Theatre have come together for the benefit of students and the region.

Emory & Henry College and the Barter Theatre renewed their partnership on Oct. 17 in the lobby of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. The partnership allows for theatre students at Emory & Henry to gain experience in the professional theatre world before graduating and seeking jobs in the theatre profession.

Speaking in front of an audience of Barter and Emory & Henry staff and theatre students, Dr. John Wells, president of Emory & Henry College, began the signing with a few words. “Over a decade ago, the Barter Theatre and the Emory & Henry Theatre Department stood shoulder to shoulder and decided to help one another in increasing the value of theatre in this region,” Wells said. “This partnership gives our students great insights into the theatre profession. We at Emory & Henry are so glad to continue this partnership on this wonderful occasion.”

The formal partnership allows Emory & Henry theatre students to attend more than eight Barter productions a year, including the actor talk-backs following each show. The students are also able to gain access to several Barter Theatre internships.

“Legendary. That is how the book that named Emory & Henry as one of the top 50 ‘colleges that change lives’ described the partnership between Emory & Henry and the Barter Theatre,” said Kelly Bremner, chair of the Theatre Department at Emory & Henry. “It’s that tight bond between liberal arts and pre-professional education that makes the partnership legendary.”

Students who have benefitted from the Barter partnership also had a chance to speak about their experiences. “My time with the Barter has been so impactful on my theatre career,” said James Jiggetts, one of the student speakers. “It has allowed me to learn and grow and make more friends and connections than I thought possible.”

Following the speakers, President Wells and Richard Rose signed the contracts of partnership. The Barter Theatre has other ties to Emory & Henry College, such as the weekly show,Theatre Matters, that has aired on WEHC 90.7 FM for over a decade.

“Education is at the heart of everything the Barter does,” said Richard Rose, producing artistic director for the Barter Theatre.
