Mitchell’s Poetry Recognized in New Publication

Dr. Felicia Mitchell’s poetry is featured in the recent publication showcasing writers from across Appalachia, Mountains Piled Upon Mountains.

Dr. Felicia Mitchell has two poems in the recent publication Mountains Piled Upon Mountains: Appalachian Nature Writing in the Anthropocene. Edited by Jessica Cory for West Virginia University Press, the book features nearly fifty writers from across Appalachia sharing their place-based fiction, literary nonfiction, and poetry.

“I am honored to be included in this anthology of nature writing from Appalachia,” says Mitchell. “Jessica Cory did such an excellent job with the way she organized the book, which will be useful for general reading and classroom use.” Mountains Piled Upon Mountains Mountains Piled Upon Mountains

Moving beyond the tradition of transcendental nature writing, much of the work collected engages current issues facing the region and the planet and provides readers with insights on the human-nature relationship in an era of rapid environmental change.

“So many of my poems grow out of my relationship with the Appalachian landscape, from my own yard and woods to the trails that I hike,” adds Mitchell. “The poems in Mountains Piled Upon Mountains represent experiences in both my yard and a trail!”

Dr. Mitchell is an English Professor at Emory & Henry College, where she challenges students to think creatively, work collaboratively, and write papers and poems they will be proud of for years to come.
