Emory & Henry College Announces New Engineering Science Program for Fall 2020

Beginning this fall, Emory & Henry College will offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science.

This unique program will give students a broad-based fundamental engineering education through exploration and application of engineering principles to a range of problems encountered in a variety of engineering and basic science fields. Successful students will be prepared for careers in a variety of engineering fields, or may choose to work  at the interface of engineering and society in positions focused on technical writing, marketing, project management, and more.

“Emory & Henry is uniquely equipped to meet the demand for qualified workers in engineering and associated fields in the Appalachian region and beyond,” says Dr. Danielle Morel, Chair of the Department of Physics and Engineering. “Our faculty span a range of basic science and engineering disciplines and have extensive real world experience working in engineering fields. The interdisciplinary nature of the program prepares our majors to enter the workforce in a variety of demanding engineering positions while providing them the flexible skillset to tackle the problems of tomorrow.”

Graduates of Engineering Science at Emory & Henry will not only have a strong foundation in science, math, and engineering principles but a thorough understanding of key ethical, economic, and environmental effects of engineering on society gained through specially developed classes for them.  

“Today’s engineers need to be more than good technical thinkers, they must also be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients alike,” said Morel. “Additionally, they must be knowledgeable about the human, social, economic, and environmental aspects of engineering problems and their solutions.”

The Engineering Science degree at Emory & Henry will require students to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to hands-on projects. The program will feature shadowing and internship opportunities with local and regional engineering firms.  This hands-on engineering experience coupled with the guidance from the faculty who will leverage their years of engineering work experience will prepare students to make the best possible impression on prospective employers. With these many unique features, the new Engineering Science program will prepare students for rewarding careers in engineering or continuing studies in graduate school.
