Emory & Henry College’s American Chemical Society Student Chapter Receives High Honors

The Emory & Henry College student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) was recognized with an Honorable Mention for chapter activities in the 2018-2019 academic school year.

The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific professional organization. Students with an interest in the chemical sciences participate in ACS undergraduate student chapters as a means to further their knowledge of chemistry, practice community outreach, and develop their professional network.

“Professor Jamie Ferguson, faculty advisor of the chapter, deserves special commendation,” says Bonnie Charpentier, 2019 President of the national American Chemical Society. “Professor Ferguson’s efforts certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the country.”

Emory & Henry students in ACS have continued to grow their professional network and knowledge. The chapter has taken field trips to both Oak Ridge National Lab and Eastman Chemical Company. Additionally, the chapter has sponsored and promoted several chemistry Lyceum lectures and organized a joint monthly meeting with the local professional American Chemical Society for further learning and networking.

The group is also involved in several community outreach events, including organizing High School Chemistry Day, where local high school students come to Emory & Henry campus, and ACS members lead them through a college-level chemistry lab activity, give them a tour of the science labs and talk to them about life as a college student. They also participate in Chemistry Day for 4th graders, sponsored by Eastman Chemical Company, and STEM workshops for 6th grade girls at Virginia Highlands Community College.

Previously, the campus chapter has been awarded a Green Chemistry Award for having held three sustainable chemistry-related events in one academic year. In the future, the chapter plans to hold a glass-blowing workshop, take a trip to NanoSonic and organize a trip to a regional or national ACS conference.
