Dr. Fisher spreads Christmas cheer in her online classroom

When Dr. Fisher packed her wardrobe for a trip home to Alabama over spring break, she didn’t know that she wouldn’t be able to come back for several weeks.

Because of the state’s stay-at-home order, Dr. Fisher has been staying with her grandmother since early March with only the clothes she packed for a four-day trip.

Dr. Fisher, assistant professor of Political Science, decided to make the best out of the situation. When she started teaching her first online class, her students were surprised to see her donning her Grandma Betty’s festive Christmas sweater.

“I think my students found it pretty amusing, and maybe a little absurd,” says Dr. Fisher. “But, the times in which we are living are so stressful. Taking and teaching classes online when you weren’t planning on doing so is stressful- not to mention all of the financial, emotional, and family-related challenges people are facing right now.”

She isn’t stopping there. Dr. Fisher will continue to bring joy and fun to this new situation for both students and faculty by wearing different Christmas sweaters and festive attire for the rest of the semester.

“In this time of isolation, I have felt comfort and joy seeing my students and colleagues online,” says Dr. Fisher. “I hope the silly sweaters have made people feel more at ease or a bit of joy, even if for just an hour of class.”

Emory & Henry spans facilities from Marion to Bristol in Virginia serving more than 1,400 students.
