Emory & Henry senior Toni Jo Zeigler wins prestigious Leidig Poetry Award

Our Emory & Henry seniors are preparing to graduate and change the world.

Toni Jo Zeigler, a senior at Emory & Henry College from Ferrum, Va., is the 2020 winner of the prestigious Leidig Poetry Award for their poem “Balance.” Ziegler will receive an honorarium and a broadside printing of the poem. This year’s judge was poet Tyehimba Jess, whose visit to campus for the annual Leidig Poetry Lectureship was canceled because of the pandemic. 

Zeigler, who will graduate in Fall 2020 with a major in Creative Writing and a minor in Psychology,  considers writing aform of reverence. Zeigler believes the best way to cherish the glory in everyday moments is to write about them. Of “Balance,” Zeigler says, “This poem is meant to draw attention to the light and dark of the world, mixing a certain playfulness with something much more sinister. The church and the graveyard work in tandem to achieve a fuller picture than either image could create on its own.”

The Leidig Lectureship in Poetry honors Dr. Daniel G. Leidig, who graduated from Emory & Henry College and later raught 30 years at his Alma Mater, where he served variously as Stuart Professor of English, Dean of the College and acting President. The lectureship was established in his name in 1996 by Helen Power, former librarian at Emory & Henry College (1943-1971), and Harriette Mooring Horner, an honor graduate of the Class of 1990 at Emory & Henry College.  The purpose of the Lectureship named in Dr. Leidig’s honor is to encourage the study, writing, reading and sharing of poetry as vital human undertakings.

Additionally, the College celebrated the inaugural cohorts of the Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and the Doctor of Occupational Therapy.
