Healthcare Career Camps at Emory & Henry Encourage High School Healthcare Hopefuls

Emory & Henry College will host the fourth annual Healthcare Career Camp for three weeks this summer with remote and in-person sessions across southwest Virginia designed to prepare high school students for a diversity of healthcare careers.

Beginning Monday, June 6, the first week-long camp will be held at Emory & Henry’s campuses in Emory and Marion as well as at the Bristol Virginia Public Schools office, and offer remote broadcast. Registration for the healthcare career camp is open now and spots are limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Each session will offer value to students who are interested in pursuing a career in many healthcare fields, including:

– physical therapy and occupational therapy

– physician assistant

– nursing

– athletic training

– optometry

– dentistry

– chiropractic medicine

– pharmacy

– veterinary medicine

There will be three opportunities for high school students to attend the Healthcare Career Camp. Students participating in the camp will have the option of commuting to the base camp they have chosen, tuning into the broadcast or staying on Emory & Henry’s campus. The camps will feature Emory & Henry faculty from the Health Science campus, Exercise Science and Nursing programs. Monday, June 13 and Monday, June 20 mark the beginning of the following camps. The second week of the healthcare career camp will feature a focus on nursing as a career.

“The camp is a tremendous step toward increasing the number of healthcare providers in our region,” said J.P. Barfield, Associate Dean of the Emory & Henry School of Health Sciences and Exercise Science professor. Each basecamp will offer a different experience for the students. The Emory & Henry camp at Hickory Hall, home of the new Exercise Science and Pre-Health lab/classroom, will feature additional healthcare sites in Meadowview, Emory and Glade Spring. The camp at the Emory & Henry College of Health Sciences campus will feature healthcare sites around Marion. The camp at the Bristol Virginia Public Schools Office will feature healthcare sites around Bristol Virginia and Tennessee.

The camps will offer attendees the opportunity to shadow healthcare professionals and learn from them in working environments. Barfield believes that it is beneficial for high school students to shadow healthcare workers to understand their duties. Shadowing will also offer students a look at various healthcare positions, giving students the chance to evaluate how they fit in healthcare careers.

“The demand for healthcare providers is only going to increase over the next decade,” Barfield continued. “Emory & Henry is committed to developing more prospective healthcare workers to fill the need.”
