E&H Mass Comm Student Story: Jackson Arnold highlights a big award for Carolyn Foster Doss

by Monica Hoel
This is part of a series of stories by members of the 2022 E&H Mass Comm 302 Class.

The first woman to score 1,000 points at Holston Highschool, has just been named Damascus Middle School teacher of the year. Carolyn Foster-Doss turns everything she touches into gold, elevating the Southwest Virginia community to great heights on and off the court.

Trading in her jump shot for lesson plans, Carolyn Foster-Doss continues to dazzle her audience with her spectacular moves. The E&H Hall-of-Famer has won the 2021-22 Damascus Middle School Teacher of the Year award.

Foster-Doss, E&H class of 1986, was inducted into the E&H Sports Hall-of-Fame in 1999. In addition, she holds her place in the E&H women’s basketball record book as she is 7th all-time in scoring (1160), 2nd in rebounds (821) and 1st in rebounds per game (10.2). She earned two MVP awards, a one-time All-ODAC second team member, a one-time All-ODAC first team member, selected to the all-tournament team twice and a one-time all-state member.

“I have been blessed to be surrounded by good teachers, mentors, coaches, and support from family and friends,” said Foster-Doss. “During my time at Emory & Henry, I had the opportunity to play with some of the best student-athletes in the area. We complemented each other on and off the court, and we proudly played for Emory and our community.”

Now teaching world geography at Damascus Middle School, she acknowledges the parallels between sports and teaching.

“I learned that discipline is a key to having success in sports and teaching. Sports and teaching require one to be on time and put in the hours to accomplish daily and weekly goals,” said Foster-Doss.

Foster-Doss has been teaching for 35 years at middle school and high school levels, ultimately being with DMS for the last 8.

Despite being set to retire at the end of the 2021-22 academic year, she continues to create a positive learning environment in her classrooms through high expectations and high amounts of love.

“Representing Damascus Middle School as the ‘Teacher of the Year’ is an honor that I will always hold as a special award because I was selected by my peers,” said Foster-Doss. “I enjoy working with my students and seeing their success in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom.”

While Foster-Doss is no longer coaching any sports, her final advice to current student-athletes is simple: follow the fundamentals.

“Each athlete must be determined and dedicated to the sport,” said Foster-Doss. “A player must continue to practice on their own, whether it is during the season or the off-season. Next, a player must study the game since it is changing all the time. Lastly, a player has to have a passion or love for the game.”

“Emory & Henry has the reputation of producing highly qualified graduates that can fulfill the positions that agencies are seeking,” said Foster-Doss.
