Hannah Long Acquires Books for Harper Collins

Hannah is breaking a long family tradition – and the adventure is paying off.

As an assistant editor for Broadside Books (an imprint within Harper Collins), Hannah Long reads a lot of non-fiction. Broadside is focused on a niche of readers that are conservative or libertarian. She says she experiences a lot of variety in the manuscripts that cross her desk: some are really interesting, but just not marketable; some offer great points of view but aren’t explained very well; and some offer an idea that is so obvious that there isn’t really any mystery about it that makes a person want to read a whole book about it. “Some of these ideas would be a good article, but not a whole book.”

How does she manage to review so many books? Hannah says that she’s not actually such a fast reader; she has an app that reads the manuscripts to her while she’s doing housework or walking. “I’m easily distracted! So this allows me to pay attention to the words while also doing something else.”

Hannah is a big non-fiction reader – but, ironically, her real passion is fantasy. She’s a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings, and she found that J.R.R. Tolkien’s writing fulfilled something for her that she heard C.S. Lewis express. “C.S. Lewis said that fantasy shouldn’t make you want to travel to far away lands; it should re-enchant the place you live.”

One day, she looked out the windows of her home in Rural Retreat and realized the Blue Ridge Mountains looked very much like the fictitious mountains in The Lord of the Rings. And perhaps that’s what ultimately gave her the courage to break a long-standing family tradition of “not going anywhere.” She says her family is not known for venturing out from Southwest Virginia, but her father, Allan Long, encouraged her to break that model and venture out in ways he had never had the courage to do. Her father, who listens to the Metropolitan Opera on his truck radio while clearing brush on their family property, pushed her to get past her fears about leaving home, and now Hannah is living in Brooklyn, New York, working for HarperCollins, and experiencing all the culture that she once only saw in the media.

She says her journey began on the internet. “The internet gave me a chance to see parts of the world I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. And I used it to network.” Hannah was writing for a national magazine while still a college sophomore – a gig she got because she found someone on Twitter and asked about submitting something. That same courage led to a great college internship, and then to this great job.
