Richard Joyce’s Artwork Featured in Gallery

by Monica Hoel
In 2003, life changed dramatically for Richard Joyce, E&H Class of 1969. But nothing could change his love for life’s beauty.

Richard came to Emory & Henry in 1965 from Newport News, Virginia. For many years he ran the Hampton City Schools Planetarium. He was the facility’s director from its opening in the mid1970s until budget cuts led to its closure in the early 1990s. He gave many student tours and community programs during his tenure.

He later opened an audio visual business. But in the early 2000s, Richard fell from a ladder and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

While life changed radically, he never lost his love and appreciation for the beauty of life. He has continued his hobby of photography and is painting some now.

In the spring of 2022, he was the featured artist on exhibit at the Piedmont Arts gallery and education space in Martinsville. His show was called Brain Injury: No Limits, and featured a range of his work. The show was on display from March 26-May 7, 2022.

He recently won second place in the Reynolds Homestead art show, and  he has a permanent art exhibit at Shoreview Rehabilitation Center in Newport News, Virginia where he spent several months in rehab. He says he particularly enjoys donating artwork.
