The Woman Behind the Statue

There was a special ribbon-cutting in Emory on June 4.

Meg Hathaway Retinger says she just felt compelled to do something after the loss of Bonny the Scottish Terrier. “I never met her, but had seen her adventures on Facebook, and it just seemed like she was part of campus.”

And now Bonny will remain part of campus because Meg made a very thoughtful gift to Emory & Henry of a statue that looks like the same little dog who greeted students on the sidewalk and begged treats from every office on campus. 

Bonny’s human was Dr. Margaret Hutson; the puppy was a gift from some former students at a private school where she once taught. In 2015, when Dr. Hutson’s health failed, Bonny moved into a different house on her home street in Emory. Dr. Hutson passed away in 2017, and Bonny died in December of 2021. Bonny’s second human was Monica Hoel (’85).

Meg was on campus on June 4 to see the statue and bench located near Stewart French House, and she did the honors of cutting a ribbon to officially complete the gift.

Despite her decidedly Scottish Terrier disposition, Bonny had been a great source of smiles for E&H students, staff, and faculty, and Meg hopes the statue will be a continued source of happiness for the community. “Maybe students will even rub her head for luck!”
