Kelli Landreth is a Traveling Occupational Therapist

by Monica Hoel
Kelli says Occupational Therapy (OT) is “the greatest profession.”

She says she wasn’t that kid who knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up, but after watching her cousin go through some occupational therapy she thought that just might be the right track for her own career.

Not all of us know a lot about OT, perhaps because we haven’t had need of one … yet. Kelli laughs as she admits, “I’ve been doing this for several years and I’m pretty sure my parents still don’t know what I do!”

It’s a fascinating field that encourages patients who need help with the sort of every-day tasks that make independent living successful. The discipline offers patients a variety of assistance: teaching basic skills to those who may simply need practice getting back to normal after an accident or a long rehabilitation, or offering tricks and tips for doing tasks more efficiently, or even suggesting products that are designed to help those who have different abilities for holding or using certain items. OT professionals even work with people to be sure their homes are equipped and organized in a way to offer optimum success.

Kelli is a traveling occupational therapist, currently living in Florida. She signed a 13-week contract, and at the end of that time period, she’ll decide if she wants to ask to stay a bit longer or move on to a new location. Sometimes the hosting facility doesn’t need someone longer than 13 weeks.

She is currently serving in a level 1 trauma center, and she loves that she is getting to learn so much about that area of medicine. “It keeps me on my toes with medical knowledge I never expected to learn about as an occupational therapist.”

Kelli was part of Emory & Henry’s inaugural OT class – which means it wasn’t accredited yet when she enrolled. She says that was “Terrifying!” but also exciting. “The professors allowed us to have a say in how the program was developed. I still hear from my faculty members!”

She has also served as a mentor for E&H School of Health Sciences interns who needed professional experience to complete their degree. She loved that opportunity, and looks forward to doing that again when she’s not in traveling mode.

“It’s an amazing profession, and I love it every day. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I don’t think you can go wrong with any profession that is serving others.”

You can enjoy a conversation with this bright and lively young professional on the Duck Pond Wall podcast. And if you know someone interested in Occupational Therapy, be in touch with the E&H Alumni Office to get contact information for someone who can answer your questions.
