Donald Thurston is Living a Life of Promise

Donald Thurston has pledged to be his best: and he is setting a fine example for a younger generation.

Donald is a property manager for Enterprise Holdings Inc., which represents Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo and National Car Rental. He is the Group Property Development and Facilities Manager, overseeing more than 70 different stores and properties. Even though he is the person responsible for every broken pipe and pothole at each of those office locations in Maryland he says he loves the challenge and he’s happy to stay busy.

He also appreciates that his company believes in a healthy work-family balance. With ten-year-old twins he gets a lot of opportunities to be in the bleachers, and his office supports that. “I’m not that dad who goes to the game and then stares at the phone. I can leave work behind for a couple hours and cheer for my kids.”

Donald is a true believer in young people. He is particularly involved in issues related to diversity and inclusion, and he’s been impressed with changes he has seen at Emory & Henry. “It really makes me feel good to see messages from my college about the work they’re doing for diversity.”

He has recently been in a master’s series for distinguished leaders; a minority forum in the Washington D.C. area for professionals over 35 who are in leadership roles. Participants agree to meet once a month for a year to do research, read, attend seminars, and together learn how to be promise-driven individuals.

Donald describes a promise-driven leader as someone who pledges to be the best version of himself or herself…and then works to encourage others, especially young people, to also be their best. “When I wake up, I have a purpose…and that’s to be a better person, better father, better husband, better professional, better leader….and set an example for the younger generation coming along – become a mentor to the younger generation to assist in their personal growth.”

In working with young people, he finds that they are seeking to have a purpose in life. And is impressed by their ability to question the world so intently and intelligently. “I don’t think I ever thought to question things like they do.” And to illustrate his point, he adds with a laugh, “When Bob Johnson said run, I ran!”

He says he remembers being prideful as a young person and not thinking he needed any help, so he’s sensitive to the fact that young people do need help, and it’s our job as mentors to reach out to them. “I think we have to think about this world as a great place to be. It’s a great time. There are so many opportunities. And I think young people are going to do a great job in the next 20 years. They have creative minds and they’re bringing new things to the world.”
