E&H Ribbon Cutting Opens New Paul Adrian Powell, III Student Success Center

Hundreds of students at Emory & Henry College have a new Student Success Center to call home that was dedicated Friday, September 16, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony with members of the Powell family, President John W. Wells and former President Charlie Sydnor presiding. With the Powell family’s generous and continued gifts, a new center was constructed in Wiley Hall, where a former auditorium was housed. It features a welcoming lounge with a coffee bar, a tech-savvy classroom and multiple offices for staff and students.

“This is an amazing moment for Emory & Henry,” said President Wells. “For 186 years our college has been focused on the success of our students, their overall experience and the connections they make while belonging to this great institution. The new center takes it all to the next level to meet the needs of our students in many facets of their lives.”

The Center is home to first-year advising and experiences, success coaches, disability services, counseling services, and mental wellness. A location for student-athletes is also available in the King Center and the Marion campus for health science students. Services are free to help students manage the routine changes that will take place in their lives as a college student, as well as when more difficult changes or challenges arise. Support is also offered from “Gus” the black lab therapy dog. Tutoring and peer mentoring is available to students to impact academic success.

“Our staff is made up of very talented people who take their roles seriously to enhance student experiences and outcomes,” said Dean of Student Success, Travis Proffitt. “We’re changing lives. Now, more than ever, we are committed to providing a living and learning environment that supports the whole student in their journey by providing a wide range of holistic services to ensure their success. It is our deepest honor to journey alongside students during this time in their life, and the student success staff are among the most passionate and talented professionals I’ve ever had the privilege to know. E&H students are in very good hands.”

Student Success Coaches help students connect with resources and create strategic plans to accomplish their personal and academic goals. “I enjoy supporting students as they pursue their education and making sure every student and Emory & Henry College is seen, supported and celebrated,” said Carleigh Blaylock, a member of the coaching team.

Sydni Leonard, E&H Class of 2020, serves as a First Year Academic Advisor. In this position, she helps students choose or change majors, select and register for appropriate courses, get connected with academic support services, such as tutoring and success coaching, explore study abroad opportunities and participate in career exploration through activities such as internships and undergraduate research experiences.

At the opening of the academic year, students were able to log into TimelyCares - a new 24/7 app that offers access to healthcare and mental wellness no matter the time of day. Students are connected to doctors and counselors anytime day or night when needed. The app also offers exercise, nutrition and mindfulness tips.
