River’s Way- A Longstanding Partnership Continues

by Ty Smith

One of the many initiatives bringing the Emory & Henry community closer to the surrounding area is the River’s Way Student Organization.

River’s Way is a non-profit working with adults with different abilities. Students work alongside the organization based in Bristol, Virginia to help adults with disabilities navigate life and the situations they come across. Their program includes activities such as walking, yoga, teaching life skills, and meal prep; they also do other things such as civic engagement with the community garden, trail maintenance, goal setting and visiting people.

One of the student participants, Conner Pratt, is a part of the Civic Leader Scholars on Emory & Henry campus and has been working with Rivers Way for a semester now. He says the events “are a fun way to be involved and help others”. The most recent events were Walktober on October 22nd and an on campus event on November 5th. The River’s Way Student Organization plans at least two on-campus events per semester where they invite River’s Way members to spend the day here. During this semester’s first event in October, participants engaged in get to know you games, completed Halloween crafts, ate in the cafe, and attended the Homecoming football game. On November 5th, the E&H softball team set up a t-ball game, and members of Phi Kappa Alpha did crafts and played fun games. Everyone involved, including our five students on the leadership team who planned and organized the events, is excited to continue their work with Rivers Way Organization for years to come!

Members of Greek Life supported the River's Way event by helping with games and crafts.
