Derek Jones and Anna Newman Jones Have a New Project: Peddling Jack’s
When looking for a fun new challenge, some people take up a hobby: but Derek and Anna opened a store.
Peddling Jack’s is a new men’s specialty store in Abingdon that is the brain child of Derek Jones and Anna Newman Jones. They specialize in the sort of gift items they enjoy finding when they travel and shop – and they’re excited to bring those interesting, unique niche items to their own community.
On the shelves you’ll find hats, sweaters, coolers, leather goods, skin care products, and more – and many items are locally sourced. SoHo Flight Co., Bristol Leather Co., Abingdon Bee Company are just a few of the names you’ll find that let you know that you’re looking at goods that were produced in the region.
The endeavor has also involved a ton of their E&H friends and family members. Their brother-in-law Emory Reid (E&H Master’s 2016, married to Anna’s sister Cathy Newman Reid, E&H 2003). Anna says when they needed names for their line of skin care products they reached out to college pals. “Greg Vannoy [E&H 1997] came up with a name for our line of knuckle rubs (Lathering Jack’s) then other friends named all the scents: Derek came up with Pine Mountain; Todd Woodall [E&H 1994] gave us Craftsman (it smells like a woodworking shop); David Miller [E&H 2000] thought of Plumb Clean (a nod to Plumb Alley); and Aaron Fuller [E&H 1998] gave us Lumberjack.”
The work of the store isn’t just about commerce. Derek says they’ve also enjoyed the chance to employ a wide range of folks that include Anna’s mom (Andrea Winesett Newman, E&H 1975) and even kids of their friends. He adds that these teenagers really benefit from the experience, but they are also a big help to the business since they’re far better at social media than he and Anna!
And the part they seem to enjoy the most is being part of a thriving town. Peddling Jack’s is one of several new stores on Main Street in Abingdon, and these creative young entrepreneurs are all enjoying the chance to work together to create unique events for the public. The Joneses opened their store the weekend of the town’s big trick-or-treat event and Anna says we’d never believe how much candy they gave out that afternoon! In January, they participated with other merchants for a block party. And on Feb. 3 (2023) they’re teaming up with other Main Street businesses to do a “Night of Bourbon and Leather.”
Derek and Anna’s faces both beam when they talk about the chance to have a positive impact. “We’re excited to be able to support the community.”
Enjoy a conversation with Derek and Anna on the Duck Pond Wall podcast where you can find out where the name Peddling Jack’s came from!
