Emory & Henry College Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Vibrant Events

Emory & Henry is proud to announce its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, a month-long tribute to the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. Until November 1, Emory & Henry will host events and educational programs showcasing the diversity, art, history and traditions of Hispanic and Latinx cultures.

Key events during Emory & Henry’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration include Latin dance classes, in which Emory & Henry will host Latin dance classes for students on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. from September 20 to October 18 at the white tent outside of Van Dyke Center on the Emory campus; a bilingual dinner and worship service in which Emory & Henry will host a fellowship dinner and bilingual worship service on Friday, October 1, at 5 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel on the Emory campus with co-sponsor, E&H Spiritual Life; the Hispanic Heritage Month Radio Shows, an opportunity to tune into WEHC 90.7 for a special radio program commemorating National Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday, October 4 and Tuesday, October 10.

Additional events include the Hispanic Heritage Month panel, an opportunity to meet Dr. Oleski Miranda Navarro and some students of Hispanic origin currently attending Emory & Henry at the Board of Visitors in Van Dyke Center on the Emory campus; Día de Los Muertos skull painting, inviting students to paint skulls to be placed on an altar on Wednesday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at the Board of Visitors in Van Dyke Center and wreath-making activities on Wednesday, November 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Damer house on the Emory campus.

In addition to the events offered by Emory & Henry’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, the Department of World Languages offers students in Spanish language courses at Emory & Henry service opportunities in exchange for extra credit. The opportunities include the Chilhowie Hispanic Health Fair on Sunday, October 22, 2023, story hours for elementary-aged children in Abingdon, Va. and Glade Spring, Va., teaching Spanish to gifted and talented English-speaking elementary school students and providing childcare to children of adults in English as a Second Language classes.

This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will be a vibrant and inclusive experience for the Emory & Henry community. The celebration is sponsored and hosted by the World Languages Department, Student Activities and the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging.
