Randy Queen, E&H Class of 2002, Named Virginia’s School Psychologist of the Year

by Billy Chandler

Randy is the leading school psychologist for the Roanoke County Public Schools.

The following press release was received on October 20, 2023, from the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists:

Randal Queen Receives State’s Highest School Psychology Honor

Randal Queen of Roanoke County Public Schools is Virginia’s School Psychologist of the Year.

The award was announced on October 20 by the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists meeting in Harrisonburg.

Queen was nominated by Maggie Holliman one of Roanoke County’s School Psychologists. Holliman reported that Queen is “well respected at the district and even the state level.” For example, he is a recognized expert on helping schools tape Medicaid funds for services that happen in educational settings. He has presented statewide to more than 500 providers.

On accepting the award Randal, who goes by Randy, noted that he shared the accomplishments with co-workers. “If you think I’m good you should meet the rest of the team.”

Queen is the lead school psychologist for Roanoke County Public Schools. Most of this service is still directly to children and parents for the school system. A graduate of Emory and Henry and Radford, he began in the profession in 2005 in Martinsville City. He has served Roanoke County since 2006, and as the lead school psychologist for the last decade.

On having a list of his accomplishments read out Queen noted “I think they embellished a bit.”

“We are honored to recognize Randy for his outstanding contributions to school psychology in Virginia!” notes Tiffany Horsby, President of the Academy. “Thank you for your efforts to engage in comprehensive service delivery for all kids!”

Horsby noted that the award was a complete surprise to Randy. He knew about the nomination, but not that he won.

School Psychologist of the Year is the highest honor given by VASP on a regular basis. Randy Queen now becomes the Commonwealth’s nominee for the national award next year.
