Ed Morgan is the New Director for COA

Ed Morgan has a new hat.

Across the years, Ed has worn many hats and in Southwest Virginia he may be best known for donning the mayor’s chapeau. Serving for years as the mayor of the town of Abingdon gave him notoriety and community stature that will follow him always. But in the past year, he has been convinced to try his hand at a new challenge: Director of the College for Older Adults sponsored by the SWVA Higher Education Center.

It’s a job Ramsey White did for 17 years, so he has big shoes to fill. But Ed is tackling the new role with the same energy and creativity he brought to the mayor’s office. He’s finding new ways to market the program, expanding class offerings, widening the circle of topics covered, and this semester he’s even bringing in an international speaker for a special event.

College for Older Adults (COA) is really aimed at anyone 50 years old and older, but Ed says he would welcome anyone who really wanted to participate. Lifelong learning is the best way to keep your brain active, and COA offers classes in the fall and spring that cover topics from physics to history to literature to science. All the instructors are volunteers, and class participants only pay $40 for a semester and they can take as many classes as they wish. And as Ed says, the best part is “There are no tests, no exams, it’s just learning for the sake of learning!”

He points out that it’s also a great opportunity to make important social connections. Ed notes that we all suffered a lot of isolation during the pandemic, and getting together with others is an important goal for a program he says can “educate, enlighten, and entertain.”
