Emory & Henry to Host U.K. Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage

One of England’s best-loved authors and current U.K. Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, is an award-winning poet, author, songwriter, playwright and translator. Notable for works like The Unaccompanied and Paper Aeroplane, he has also translated classics like The Odyssey.

One of England’s best-loved authors and current U.K. Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, is an award-winning poet, author, songwriter, playwright and translator. Notable for works like The Unaccompanied and Paper Aeroplane, he has also translated classics like The Odyssey. His book, Walking Home: A Poet’s Journey, details his 265-mile tour across England. In 2010, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). His other numerous awards in the UK include the Gregory Award and a Forward Prize; in the US, he has received a major Lannan Award. He is currently a professor of poetry at the University of Sheffield.

In appreciation of former Stuart Professor of English, Dean of the College and acting President, Dr. Daniel G. Leidig, Jr., and in recognition of his love of poetry, the Leidig Lectureship in Poetry sponsors events during National Poetry Month to introduce students to the world of poetry. The purpose of the Lectureship named in Dr. Leidig’s honor is to encourage the study, writing, reading and sharing of poetry as vital human undertakings.
