Emory & Henry’s Kelly Library Offers Birding Backpacks

by Monica Hoel

Students can check out far more than books at Kelly Library these days. In fact, there’s a rather interesting array of items available there that students might need for class – like a complete skeleton, for instance.

Recently Kelly Library and the E&H Health and Human Performance (HHP) division teamed up to add binoculars and field guides to the shelves for budding birders to borrow.

In the spring of 2024, HHP’s Core 103 Lifetime Wellness offerings added “Birding As Wellness” as one of the course choices for students to take to earn one of the two half-credit activity courses required for graduation. Other activity courses include things like archery and fly-fishing, and the idea is to learn a wellness skill that can follow a student into life beyond college.

The idea of using birding as a wellness activity is simply that getting outside for a few minutes a day and paying attention to birds, their songs, and their behavior can drastically improve personal health. Studies have proven that this activity can improve upon everything from depression to stress to attention span.

Following the cue of other libraries that offer birding kits, Kelly Library now has two little backpacks available for students to check out like a library book. Each bag is stocked with a set of binoculars, a guide to Virginia birds, and a resource sheet to offer websites and books for additional reading.

Ruth Castillo (Emory & Henry’s Head Librarian) and Beverly Sheddan (Chair of the HHP department and program director for E&H’s Lifetime Wellness Program) each hope that students will check out the backpacks and take advantage the opportunity to find a new way to be outdoors and destress. Students taking the Birding As Wellness class in the spring of 2024 checked out the packs routinely for a closer look at campus birds – including White-breasted Nuthatches, House Finches, a surprise duo of Fish Crows, and a pair of American Kestrels who were hanging out in the center of campus
