Christina Mitchell is Creating New Worlds at NASA

by Monica Hoel

Christina has found her way to The Lost Universe.

Fans of table-top role playing games have a new adventure to pursue.

Christina Mitchell pitched a crazy idea to the leadership team at NASA about developing a space-themed adventure that could be played within the structure of games like Dungeons and Dragons. To be honest, some of her supervisors didn’t really know what in the world she was talking about – but they were intrigued and encouraged her to flesh out the idea. Eventually the idea reached someone at NASA who played Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), and suddenly Christina’s crazy idea began to get more traction.

The Lost Universe is now available as a free download from the NASA website, and the game is getting a lot of buzz. Forbes magazine has done two articles on it, pointing out that this is not the sort of thing one expects from NASA. It has had 3 million interactions on X (formerly known as Twitter), and the game has been downloaded more than 100,000 times. With more than 50 million people playing D&D, most of whom are under 25 years of age, NASA is finding this is a great way to interact with an important demographic.

Christina says the best compliment she’s gotten out of all this media hype is being dubbed by someone as “The Queen of Nerds.” “My office co-workers have threatened to put it on my cubical name plate and I’m saying, ‘PLEASE DO!”

On the Duck Pond Wall podcast you can hear a fun conversation with Christina where she more fully explains the game and her process for getting it launched. (Get it?)
