Alan Hardwick Has Authored a Book on a True and Amazing Story

Alan Hardwick was working as a yacht broker when a feeble elderly man wandered into the store and said he wanted to buy a sailboat.

“He was shuffling and bent at the waist. And when I say bent, I mean that in the morning when he was bright and fresh he was bent at around a 15 degree angle: and by the end of the day he was pretty much stooped at a full right angle with his hands dangling close to the top of his shoes.”

It was hard for Alan to think the man was serious because it was unimaginable that this brittle older gentleman could manage the work of a sailboat. But over the course of the next few months, Alan would see a story unfold that prompted him to write a book.

Alan’s new book, In Mia’s Wake-A Sea Story based on Sakaye Hatashita’s Pacific Odyssey tells the true story of an octogenarian who traveled by sailboat from the coast of California across the Pacific Ocean to fulfill his wife’s wish of having her ashes scattered back home in Japan.

The story of his trip is just as harrowing as one might imagine, starting with him beginning the voyage in a storm. Alan says they tried over and over to talk him into delaying his departure, but he continually responded with, “No time. No time.” Alan also introduces us to the real man behind this mythical journey – explaining how and why he left a prestigious position in Japan to move his family to the United States, telling of how he launched a new business in Orange County, California, and even describing his training as a kamikaze pilot in World War II.

Mr. Hatashita faced sun, storms, wind, accidents, and more in order to attempt this trip that most would call impossible and foolhardy. Does he make it? We’ll have to read the book to find out!
