Emory & Henry Welcomes New Students to Kick Off the Academic Year

Hundreds of New Students Arrive as the First Class at Emory & Henry University. All E&H Students Get Free Access to Books and Waived Fees.

More than 300 new students are calling Emory, Va. home today as the first class of new students moved in at Emory & Henry University on Saturday, August 10. The 188-year-old institution achieved university status on August 1, 2024 and welcomed interim President Dr. Lou Fincher, former Senior Vice President and Dean of the School of Health Sciences, to oversee the continued growth of the university and its commitment to student success and the impact to Southwest Virginia.

Classes start on Wednesday, August 14. This year all students receive access to books and waived fees, as part of a new tuition structure. During registration, students receive their books for fall courses immediately or digitally delivered to their inbox. According to Provost Michael Lane, more than three quarters of books are now available digitally and accessible via a student’s laptops. Laptops are available in the E&H library for students who don’t have access to a computer.

New students are joining the Emory & Henry College community from 27 states and 9 countries. Twenty seven percent of the new students arrived from Southwest Va. or the Tri-Cities region. Thirty four incoming students are legacy students, with a relative who graduated from Emory & Henry. This incoming class contains 58 transfer students, with more than half from community colleges and others from four year public and private universities.

By welcoming this new class of students, Emory & Henry hosts a large student body living on campus in Emory, with more than 1,000 residential students and nearly 1,100 total undergraduate students. Final census of the total student population will be available at the beginning of September.
