WEHC 90.7 FM Wins Multiple Virginia Association of Broadcasters Awards

WEHC 90.7 Emory was recognized and honored with multiple awards for excellence in broadcasting at the 87th Annual Virginia Association of Broadcasters Awards Program, held Friday, June 21 at the Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel.

  • Outstanding Sports Coverage (1st place)-Joy Scruggs-Basketball Commentator, Anthony Smith Jr., ’24, Brandon Cox ’25
  • Best Commercial (1st place)-Welcome to Emory & Henry College, A Place of Connections
  • Best Human Interest Series (runner up)-Come to the Table, Zac Holt
  • Best Station Promotion (runner up)-WEHC Fundraising Jingle, Eugene Wolf

WEHC 90.7 Emory broadcasts a wide range of radio programs, many of which are produced locally. Leigh Anne Hunter, Assistant Manager of the station said, “Working both behind the scenes and behind the microphone, I see the amount of passion and work that our volunteer broadcasters and students put into creating unique radio for our broader community. I am especially excited that Joy Scruggs, Anthony Smith Jr., and Brandon Cox were recognized for their work on Emory & Henry Basketball broadcasts.”

After 28 seasons as Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Joy Scruggs retired in 2014, but her commitment and dedication to E&H Basketball continued. Scruggs has been the lead commentator for E&H Men’s and Women’s Basketball and has mentored many students interested in sports broadcasting. “ It has been my pleasure to provide the play by play on WEHC for E&H men’s and women’s basketball, and I am grateful for the opportunity to do so. As a former E&H basketball coach, what could be a more perfect volunteer job? More than just helping Emory & Henry fans follow the game action, I also want to help the listeners get to know more about the players and coaches. Having E&H students working with me on the broadcasts only adds to that. E&H is a unique place with special people, and I enjoy being able to share some of that in each broadcast.”

Anthony Smith Jr.,(,24) and Brandon Cox (’25) were able to work with Scruggs during this last basketball season. Smith,. Jr. graduated with a degree in Mass Communications and will attend Syracuse University to pursue a Master’s in Broadcast and Digital Journalism. Smith Jr., said,

“I first was introduced to the VAB when I interned with WEHC 90.7 the summer following my freshman year at Emory & Henry. Attending the conference and being able to meet people in the television and radio industry all across the state of Virginia was super beneficial and gave me connections that I can keep and use for the rest of my life. Working with WEHC always provided opportunities while in school and now even after graduation the station is continuing to put me in places and spaces to help me grow in the career I wish to pursue and for that I will be forever grateful.”

Cox is a rising senior, majoring in Mass Communications with a concentration in Sports Management. He plans to pursue a career in sports broadcasting. Both students served as VAB Summer Interns at WEHC 90.7 FM.

“WEHC is proud to foster student’s love of broadcast of all kinds,” said Ivy S. Sheppard, Station Manager. “The VAB is a wonderful resource for broadcasters across the commonwealth. From the annual awards, to the Best of the Best Leadership program that I was fortunate enough to be part of this past year, to regular seminars offering resources for those in the industry, the VAB inspires and connects current and future broadcasters.”

WEHC continues to benefit from its membership to the VAB. General Manager, Ivy Sheppard was just selected among applicants throughout the commonwealth to be part of a new Women in Radio mentorship program. Through partnership with Mentoring & Inspiring Women in Radio (MIW), the VAB is able to offer a one-year program that provides a mentee with the opportunity to build her technical, leadership, and management skills through monthly one-on-one meetings with leaders in the industry.

Sheppard said, “The station has grown by leaps and bounds in the past four years. I’m incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful partnership with my co-manager, Leigh Anne Hunter, and a great group of students to work with. Together we have generated exciting forward momentum. Connections are the key to everything, and I can’t wait to see how this mentorship helps us grow in even greater ways!!”
