Satterwhite to Address Female Activism During Sept. 3 Lecture at E&H

An Appalachian studies scholar whose research focuses on environmental and climate justice will speak about female activism during a presentation at Emory & Henry University on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Emily Satterwhite, a professor in the Department of Religion and Culture at Virginia Tech, will begin her lecture at 7 p.m. in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. Her discussion will address the topic, “Appalachian Women’s Unruly Activism – Past, Present, Future.”

Satterwhite, who also directs the Appalachian Studies program at Virginia Tech, is the winner of multiple teaching and research awards, including the Weatherford Award in 2011 for best non-fiction book about Appalachia.

In addition, she is co-director of Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia, a three-year initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation that seeks to highlight Black history, and serves on the Advisory Council for POWHR (Protect Our Water, Heritage, Rights), a coalition fighting the construction of the Mountain Valley fracked gas pipeline and advocating for a just energy transition.

The event, a Lyceum program for students, is free and open to the public. The presentation also provides student with the opportunity to gain points toward a digital badge signifying Radical Empathy.
