Leola Neal Griffin Helps to Establish New Bird Festival in Saltville

Leola Griffin wasn’t always a bird nerd – but she happily owns that title now!

She remembers learning about Goldfinches when she was a child and thought they were the prettiest birds she had ever seen. Fast forward to now, and Leola knows a whole lot more than Goldfinches – she’s officially among those who call themselves amateur birders.

Taking beautiful photographs, learning the names of birds, going on bird walks with friends, and teaching others about birds are just activities that are part of her life now. She’s a member of Virginia Master Naturalist (Holston Rivers Chapter), and 

So it’s no big surprise that she is also part of the volunteers working on a new bird festival in her home community of Saltville, Virginia. The Salty Bird Festival kicks off on Sept. 21, 2024, and it is being organized by the Holston Rivers chapter of Virginia Master Naturalist in partnership with the Saltville Public Library, the Museum of the Middle Appalachians, and the Smyth County Chamber of Commerce. The goal is to educate kids and families about the very special birding site in the Saltville Community: the Well Fields site in Saltville is on the Department of Wildlife Resources Bird and Wildlife Trail system and nearly 200 species of birds have been documented there.
