Emory & Henry Hosts ‘Rising Hope’ Sept. 18

A film depicting activists leading a fight against rural poverty in Mississippi will be shown and discussed Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Emory & Henry University. 

“Rising Hope” is a cinematic portrait of the forgotten Mississippi Delta and inspired citizens who share testimonies of hope in the face of historic oppression. The film begins at 7 p.m. in the Kennedy-Reedy Theatre of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts.

Rising Hope introduces audiences to a Mississippi Delta community—where hope remains infectious, despite generational poverty.

The documentary explores issues surrounding the state’s policies toward black Mississippians, the massive employment loss following the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and the devastating effects of defunding public education for consecutive generations.

The film follows a former news anchor turned church youth leader, a first-generation college student pursuing photography, the journeys of community nonprofits, and the life experiences of town mayors and local citizens.

According to Amy Sorensen, the director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging and the Women & Gender Center at Emory & Henry, audiences, through these stories of transformation, bear witness to extraordinary personal hardships, and their refusal to internalize the narrative of hopelessness.
