E&H Hosts Non-Profit to Spread Awareness of Predatory Dangers

Help Save the Next Girl will be coming to campus on Sept. 22 to help desensitize young women and girls to predatory danger.

Emory & Henry College is proud to host Gil Harrington and Jane Lillian Vance, president and vice president of the Help Save the Next Girl organization on September 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kennedy~Reedy Theatre on campus. Help Save the Next Girl is an organization dedicated to sensitizing young women and girls to predatory danger. The organization was formed after the abduction and murder of Morgan Dana Harrington in 2009. Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student, was abducted from outside a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Va.

Morgan Dana Harrington Morgan Dana HarringtonThe event is sponsored by E&H CARES, an on-campus advocacy group that seeks to strengthen services for survivors of stalking, dating or domestic violence, and sexual assault; improve offender accountability; and promote comprehensive prevention strategies within the campus community. The event is free and open to the public, and will allow listeners to hear Morgan’s story firsthand from Gil Harrington, Morgan’s mother and co-founder of Help Save the Next Girl. “E&H CARES is honored to welcome Gil Harrington and Jane Lillian Vance to campus to speak to the community about Morgan Harrington’s story and their inspiring work with the Help Save the Next Girl organization,” said Mary Ellis Rice, project coordinator for E&H CARES. “The mission of this organization, educating young women about predatory dangers, connects deeply to efforts we make on this campus to create a culture of positive bystander intervention.”

Help Save the Next Girl will be aiding E&H CARES in the days following the event to set up a chapter of their organization on campus. “We are so excited to join other institutions of higher education across the country in hosting a chapter of Help Save the Next Girl,” said Rice. “Morgan’s story resonates with all of us; because of her story and the work of her mother’s organization, we at Emory & Henry can learn to become better advocates for each other and truly help save the next girl.”
